Setyawati Fitri Anggraeni’s Presentation at the IFISH 6 (International Fishing Industry Safety & Health Conference): Success Stories and Lessons Learned

The session “Success Stories and Lessons Learned by Programmes Supporting Training, Innovation and Interventions” was held on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, in the FAO Headquarters. The session was moderated by Lissandra Cavalli and featured presentations from various experts, including Bridgette Garrett from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, USA.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) played a significant role in the event, providing a platform for discussions on occupational safety and health in the commercial fishing industry. The International Fishing Industry Safety & Health Conference (IFISH) was also a key player, fostering dialogue on innovation in occupational health and safety

One of the notable presentations was by Setyawati Fitri Anggraeni, a PhD candidate in Maritime Law and Policy at the World Maritime University, Sweden, and the managing partner of Anggraeni and Partners Anggraeni and Partners is an Indonesian law practice with a global reach, specializing in dispute resolution and providing comprehensive legal solutions for optimal risk management

The study identified that maritime safety in Indonesia is still state-centric, with most of the actors involved being state actors. It emphasized the role of fisherwomen in Tulungagung fishing communities, particularly their challenges and lack of participation in marine stewardship to enhance disaster preparedness. It was found that their involvement is often limited in fishery policies due to a lack of decision-making power and trust in local leadership especially fisherwomen.The study used a socio-legal methodology, combining legal doctrinal methods with qualitative research methods such as interviews and focus group discussions. The research was conducted in Tulungagung, Popoh, and Klathak Village in the southern coast of Java Island, Indonesia, and Jakarta

The presentations, including those by Setyawati Fitri Anggraeni and GISLI, offered valuable insights and information to help improve efforts to reduce injuries and fatalities in the commercial fishing industry.
