On April 30, 2024, Tulungagung, East Java, became the focal point for advancing maritime safety and empowering local fishing communities as Gerakan Ingat Selamat Layar Indonesia (GISLI) celebrated the inauguration of its new branch. This event, held in collaboration with the Directorate General for Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fisheries Products (PDSPKP) and the National Narcotics Agency, brought together 120 participants including fishermen and their spouses, underscoring a deep community involvement and a commitment to improving the maritime sector.
One of the event’s highlights was a session led by Fildza Nabila Avianti, S.H., LL.M., a Senior Research Associate at Anggraeni & Partners Legal Lab. Fildza, known for her extensive background in human rights and legal frameworks, brought invaluable insights into the integration of legal principles into maritime safety and the crucial role of gender inclusivity in these efforts.
In addition to the legal insights, the event also featured practical training sessions including a workshop on making tuna gohyong, a traditional fishcake, which served as a means to enhance local culinary skills and economic opportunities for the fishermen’s families. Moreover, an important anti-drug socialization led by the National Narcotics Agency emphasized community awareness and preventive measures against drug abuse, aligning with the broader themes of safety and health within the maritime community.
