We are pleased to share an important update from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).
Established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, ITLOS is a pivotal body that adjudicates disputes arising out of the interpretation and application of the Convention. The Tribunal plays a crucial role in the global legal framework for the seas and oceans, promoting the peaceful use of the marine environment and sustainable management of its resources.
As of September 18, 2024, Ms. Ximena Hinrichs Oyarce has been re-elected as the Registrar of the Tribunal. A seasoned expert in maritime law, Ms. Hinrichs Oyarce has been serving as the Registrar since 2019 and will continue her role for a second term of five years starting September 20, 2024.
Ms. Hinrichs Oyarce’s remarkable journey in the field began at the International Maritime Organization in 1995, followed by her significant contributions as the Senior Legal Officer and Head of the Legal Office at ITLOS.
