Presenting “Blue Injustice in Pahawang Island” at Parallel Session 3: Blue Carbon and Ecosystem Assessment
The Legal Lab of Anggraeni and Partners joined researchers, policymakers, and practitioners at the 5th ICMMBT International Conference, hosted by IPB University. This year’s theme, “Blue Food Nexus: Harnessing Solutions for Global Food Security and Ocean Health,” brought together hundreds of participants from across Indonesia and beyond to discuss the future of sustainable oceans.
We had the honour to take part in Parallel Session 3, held in Kasultanan Room 1 and moderated by Dr. Mubariq Ahmad (Conservation Strategy Fund). The session focused on blue carbon and ecosystem-based approaches to coastal resilience. It was a space for serious, grounded conversations—science, community experience, and legal perspectives side by side.
Our legal lab team lead by Setyawati Fitrianggraeni, and co-authored with Tiyana Sigi Pertiwi, Orima Melati Davey, and Alicia Daphne Anugerah, presented findings from fieldwork in Pahawang Island, Lampung.
Full Line-up: Parallel Session 3
While many papers focused on measuring carbon or mapping biodiversity, our Legal Lab brought something different: the legal backbone. Who owns what? Who gets to decide? Who gets left behind? These are the questions we believe must sit at the centre of Indonesia’s blue carbon strategy.
The conference opened with remarks from:
Looking Ahead
We’re proud to have been part of this important conversation. As Indonesia leads in blue carbon and blue food solutions, we’ll keep advocating for a legal framework that respects local rights, guarantees fairness, and ensures that climate progress uplifts, coastal communities.
